Chapter 2 - The Chief of Police

I stopped moving the second the barrel of the gun pointed at my chest.
Richard took a slow sip of his bourbon, his eyes filled with absolute malice.
"My family owns this entire town," Richard warned, stepping closer to me.
"The police chief is eating barbecue in my backyard right now."
"Every single guest out there will testify that Lily has been unstable and violent."
I kept my eyes locked on his, calculating the distance between us.
He was arrogant, standing too close with a weapon he barely knew how to hold.
"You think money makes you untouchable," I said quietly, keeping my tone perfectly even.
Richard laughed out loud and lowered the gun just a fraction of an inch.
In that split second, I moved faster than a man my age ever should.
I grabbed his wrist, twisted it violently upward, and heard the bone snap loudly.
Richard screamed as the gun dropped to the floor.
I struck him hard in the throat, sending him collapsing to the ground next to his spilled drink.
I rushed over to Lily, gently lifting her trembling body into my arms.
I kicked her phone out from under the couch and shoved it into my pocket.
"We are leaving right now, sweetheart," I whispered, carrying her toward the hallway.
Suddenly, a massive figure blocked the front doorway.
It was Chief Miller, holding his service weapon perfectly aimed at my head.

"Put the girl down, Marcus, or I will drop you right here," the corrupt chief ordered.
But Miller didn't know that my name wasn't actually Marcus.
