Chapter 5 - The Cabin

I slammed on the brakes, throwing the truck into park deep within the woods.

The recording continued to play, capturing the horrific sounds of Richard striking my daughter.

He had married her specifically to find me.

Fifteen years ago, the Beirut operation was the exact reason I had faked my death and walked away from the agency.

I had secured evidence of a massive government conspiracy, hiding it where no one would ever look.

I turned to Lily, wiping the tears from her bruised cheeks.

"How much did you tell him?" I asked gently.

"Nothing, Dad, I swear I don't know anything about any files," she sobbed, clutching her ribs.

I pulled her out of the truck and led her to an old, abandoned hunting cabin I used for emergencies.

I sat her down on a dusty cot and began wrapping her ribs with a medical kit from my case.

The satellite phone vibrated in my pocket, displaying a restricted tactical frequency.

I answered it, expecting my extraction team to give me an ETA.

"You are getting slow in your old age, Marcus," a familiar, gravelly voice echoed through the speaker.

My blood ran cold.

It was Cross, my former handler who was supposed to have died in Beirut.

"Cross?" I whispered in absolute disbelief.

"Richard is a very valuable client of mine now, and he wants his property back," Cross stated.

"Look out the window, old friend."

I turned toward the cabin window and saw the red dots of laser sights sweeping across the wooden walls.
