Chapter 8 - The Cornered Animal

Floodlights suddenly snapped on, blinding me from the upper catwalks of the warehouse.
I dove behind a heavy concrete pillar just as sniper fire rained down, chipping the stone near my head.
I was completely trapped, separated from Lily, and surrounded by highly trained killers.
"You should have stayed dead, Marcus!" a voice echoed through a megaphone from the rafters.
It was Richard, sounding arrogant and entirely in control.
I reloaded my weapon, counting the muzzle flashes to determine their exact positions.
There were five shooters on the upper deck and at least four moving on the ground floor.
I grabbed a heavy metal chain from the floor and threw it against a rusted generator as a distraction.
Three of the ground troops moved toward the noise, completely exposing their flanks.
I stepped out from cover and fired three perfectly placed shots, dropping them instantly.
I sprinted across the open floor, dodging a hail of bullets, and slid behind Judge Vance's bulletproof town car.
I opened the trunk and found exactly what I was hoping a paranoid judge would keep inside.
It was a fully loaded tactical shotgun and a heavy Kevlar vest.
I strapped the vest on, pumped the shotgun, and looked up at the catwalk.
Suddenly, Richard's voice echoed through the warehouse again, but he was no longer using the megaphone.

He was standing directly behind the rusted sedan outside, holding Lily at gunpoint.
"Drop the weapons, Marcus, or I put a bullet in her spine right now," Richard yelled.
