Chapter 8 - The True Mastermind

I pulled Lily tightly behind me and stared down at the encrypted analog radio on my belt.

The voice did not belong to Arthur Hawthorne or any corrupt local politician.

It was the chilling, unmistakable voice of a high-ranking cartel lieutenant.

"Who is this?" I demanded, picking up my rifle from the wet gravel.

"I am the man who actually owns the weapons listed on that silver flash drive," the voice replied smoothly.

"Arthur was a foolish middleman, and I have officially terminated his employment."

I looked over at Bradley, who was sobbing in the mud, completely unaware that his father was likely already dead.

"The FBI already has the files, so there is nothing left for you to steal," I told the cartel boss.

The man let out a dark, menacing chuckle through the radio static.

"I do not care about a few confiscated crates of rusted assault rifles, Marcus."

"I care about the secondary encrypted folder hidden deep inside that flash drive."

I frowned, realizing there was a massive layer to this conspiracy that we had entirely missed.

"What secondary folder?" I asked, signaling Tessa to secure the surrendered mercenaries.

"The folder containing the access codes to over five hundred million dollars in untraceable offshore cryptocurrency," the voice explained.

Arthur Hawthorne had not just been laundering money for the cartel; he had been secretly stealing from them.

Lily had accidentally stolen the keys to a massive criminal fortune when she took that drive.

"You have exactly twenty minutes to bring the drive to the abandoned shipyard on the edge of town," the boss commanded.

"If you refuse, I will detonate the high-yield explosives I planted under your infirmary building ten minutes ago."

My blood instantly ran ice cold as I looked toward the building where Marissa was currently handcuffed.

"Singh, scan the medical wing for explosive frequencies immediately!" I yelled.

Singh ran his modified scanner along the foundation of the building and his face turned ghostly white.

"He is not bluffing, sir, there is a massive amount of C4 wired directly to the main support pillars."

"I cannot defuse it without triggering the anti-tamper switch."

I had no choice but to comply with the ruthless cartel leader's demands.

I handed Lily over to Tessa, instructing her to evacuate the entire base to the secondary rally point.

"Do not let her out of your sight, Tessa," I ordered strictly.

I grabbed the silver flash drive, jumped into my armored tactical SUV, and sped out of the ruined front gate.

The drive to the abandoned shipyard was tense, filled with the blinding rain and flashing lightning.

I pulled into the rusted, decaying industrial lot and cut my headlights completely.

Three heavily armed cartel soldiers were standing near the edge of a deep, murky shipping canal.

Standing behind them was a tall man wearing a tailored black suit, holding a detonator switch in his hand.

"You brought the drive, just as ordered," the cartel boss said with a cruel smile.

I stepped out of my vehicle, holding the silver flash drive high in the air.

"Deactivate the bombs at my base first, or I throw this drive straight into the ocean," I threatened.

The boss laughed and casually pressed a button on the remote, disabling the explosives remotely.

"Now hand over the money, Marcus," he demanded, stepping out of the heavy shadows.

I tossed the drive through the air, but the moment he caught it, the shipyard was flooded with blinding tactical spotlights.
