Chapter 5 - The Mother's Betrayal

The revelation hit me like a physical blow to the chest.
Marissa was not just a silent bystander in the horrific abuse of our daughter.
She had actively paid a cartel hit squad to permanently silence her own flesh and blood.
I looked at Lily, whose good eye was wide with absolute shock and heartbreak.
She pulled the blanket tightly around her shoulders and began to silently weep.
I placed a gentle hand on her head, vowing silently to destroy Marissa's entire world.
"Singh, strip this mercenary's tactical gear and find the signal jammer," I ordered into the radio.
Tessa dragged the cursing mercenary into a secure holding cell in the basement.
I walked back into the operations center and booted up a secure analog phone line.
I dialed Marissa's personal cell phone number, knowing she would be awake and waiting for confirmation of the hit.
She answered on the very first ring.
"Is the problem finally resolved, Vance?" Marissa asked in a hushed, frantic whisper.
"Vance is currently bleeding on my basement floor, Marissa," I replied with a voice like crushed ice.
A sharp, terrified gasp echoed through the phone speaker.
"Marcus?" she stammered, completely losing her composed, wealthy facade.
"You actually hired a cartel hit squad to murder our little girl," I stated simply.
"You don't understand the pressure I am under, Marcus!" she screamed defensively.
"If Arthur finds out I let Lily escape with the flash drive, he will kill me himself!"
"You chose money over your own daughter, and now you are going to lose both," I promised her.
"I have the flash drive, Marissa, and I have the video of the entire family beating her."
"I am going to dismantle your perfect new life piece by piece until you have absolutely nothing left."
Marissa began to sob heavily into the phone, begging me to reconsider and destroy the drive.
"You think you are untouchable because of Arthur's money?" she hissed when her tears failed to move me.
"No, Marissa," I said calmly.
"I think cold, hard evidence is untouchable."
I hung up the phone and completely disconnected the analog line from the wall.
Singh ran into the room, holding a crushed black box with a broken antenna.
"I found the signal jammer and destroyed it, sir," Singh announced proudly.
"The satellite uplink is fully operational again."
"Send the weapon shipment files to the FBI field office in Washington immediately," I commanded.
"Bypass the corrupt local branches and send it straight to the federal cartel task force."
Singh typed rapidly, hitting the enter key with a triumphant smile.
"Files are successfully transmitted and securely received by the federal server."
I knew the FBI would take at least three hours to mobilize a raid on the Hawthorne estate.
But I also knew Arthur Hawthorne would not wait three hours to finish what he started.
The perimeter alarms suddenly began to blare with a deafening, frantic rhythm.
I looked at the security monitors and felt my blood run entirely cold.

Arthur had not sent more mercenaries to attack the front gate.
He had sent a heavily armored bulldozer to smash straight through our reinforced concrete wall.
