Chapter 1 - The Bleeding Light

My daughter reached Forward Operating Site Redstone just after two in the morning.
She was standing barefoot and shivering beneath the harsh white security lights of the main gate.
At first glance, the night guard assumed she was just another drunk college student who had wandered off the main highway.
Then I saw the way she held her left arm tightly against her bruised ribs.
I noticed the severe swelling around her right eye and the dried blood caked over her split lip.
She was nineteen years old, but in that terrible moment, Lily looked like a nine-year-old child again.
She looked exactly like she did standing in my hallway after a terrifying nightmare when she was little.
"Dad," she whispered into the freezing night air.
I crossed the gravel driveway before anyone else on my security team even realized what was happening.
Her knees completely gave out when she finally reached me.
I caught her carefully, feeling how dangerously fragile her body felt in my arms.
"Who did this to you?" I asked, keeping my voice dangerously calm.
She tried to take a deep breath but folded over in absolute agony.
The base medic sprinted over with a heavy trauma bag swinging from his shoulder.
I waved him in immediately, but Lily gripped my tactical jacket sleeve with surprising strength.
"It was Mom's new family," she cried softly.
"All of them were there, all eleven of them, and they filmed the entire thing."
Those words landed flat and hollow, which somehow made the reality of the situation much worse.
My ex-wife, Marissa, had remarried into the prestigious Hawthorne family two years earlier.
They were a family built on old money, loud lawyers, fake charity dinners, and men who shook your hand way too hard.
I looked down at my daughter's broken face and felt something inside my chest become very cold and very still.
The medic touched my shoulder and told me that we needed to move her to a sterile bed immediately.
I nodded and ordered him to take her to the infirmary for a full examination.
I commanded my staff to take photographs of every single injury and establish a strict chain of custody on all her clothing.
I also ordered that absolutely no one was allowed to touch her cell phone except for Singh, my lead cybersecurity instructor.
Lily's good eye fluttered open and looked desperately up into mine.
"I am not leaving your side," I promised her.
She finally relaxed enough to let the medical team lift her onto the stretcher.
My current training class had already gathered quietly outside the main barracks.
They were twenty-four seasoned trainees from three elite private security contracts.
They were halfway through a highly advanced executive protection and counter-surveillance course.
That entire week they had intensely studied emergency extraction and digital evidence preservation.
Now they stood completely silent in the cold night, waiting for my command.
I turned to face them, feeling the cold fury radiating from my own bones.
"Who wants a live field exercise?" I asked the quiet crowd.
Every single hand in the courtyard rose into the air without hesitation.
"This is not about blind revenge," I instructed them firmly.
"We are going to find every person involved, every digital device, every hidden copy, and every single lie."
"We will build a legal and financial case so incredibly tight that no corrupt judge can breathe around it."
A former homicide detective named Tessa Vale stepped forward from the front rank.
"What are the rules of engagement, sir?" she asked professionally.
"No mercy, no stupidity, and absolutely no cowboy nonsense," I replied.
"We take their freedom, their money, their public reputations, and their sleep."
"We do it exactly by the book so they never get their lives back."
I began handing out the residential and corporate addresses of all eleven Hawthorne family members.
Just as the team turned to gear up, Singh burst out of the infirmary holding a digital scanner.
He looked at me with wide, terrified eyes.

"Sir, Lily's phone is actively broadcasting a military-grade GPS signal right now."
"Someone is tracking her, and the signal shows a heavily armed convoy is exactly two miles from our front gate."
