Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

I stared at the burner phone in absolute silence as the line abruptly went dead.
The peaceful, happy illusion I had built over the last few weeks shattered instantly.
I walked quietly into Lily's bedroom, watching her sleep peacefully with a gentle smile on her healed face.
Sitting on her wooden dresser was a tarnished, antique silver locket I had never noticed before.
I picked it up carefully, feeling the unnatural, heavy weight of the small piece of jewelry.
I did not panic, and I did not wake my daughter from her well-deserved rest.
I had spent my entire life training for moments exactly like this one.
I walked down the hallway and quietly woke Tessa Vale from her bunk in the guest room.
"We have a new problem, Tessa," I whispered, handing her a loaded tactical shotgun.
Tessa did not ask any questions; she simply nodded and began putting on her heavy body armor.
I silently activated the base's secondary, lethal defensive grid that I had installed after the Hawthorne attack.
If this new syndicate thought they could simply walk into my home and threaten my family, they were severely mistaken.
I positioned Tessa at the top of the staircase to protect Lily's door at all costs.
I moved into the dark living room, sitting patiently in the shadows with my customized rifle resting across my lap.
The rain began to pour outside, creating a rhythmic, calming noise against the reinforced windows.
I watched the security monitors closely, waiting for the first sign of movement near the perimeter fence.
I was no longer just a tactical instructor or a concerned father.
I was the deadliest force in the valley, and I was completely ready for war.
The Hawthorne family had learned the hard way that you never threaten my daughter.
Now, this anonymous new syndicate was about to learn that exact same, fatal lesson.
Suddenly, the motion sensors along the western tree line flashed red on my security monitor.
Three black, heavily armored helicopters silently descended from the stormy clouds, hovering just above the trees.

I racked the bolt of my rifle, a cold, dark smile spreading across my face.
"Welcome to Redstone," I whispered into the quiet darkness.
