Chapter 7 - The Hostage

I froze completely in the center of the muddy courtyard, gripping Bradley by his tactical collar.
The cartel enforcers slowly raised their weapons again, sensing the sudden shift in power.
I dragged Bradley with me as I cautiously moved toward the infirmary building.
The back doors of the medical wing had been completely smashed open by a heavy pickup truck.
Marissa stood in the bright doorway, completely soaked by the rain and shaking with manic energy.
She had her arm wrapped tightly around Lily's neck, pressing a silver revolver against our daughter's temple.
"Drop your weapons right now, Marcus!" Marissa screamed hysterically.
Lily locked eyes with me, her face pale but surprisingly calm despite the gun against her head.
"Do not listen to her, Dad," Lily yelled bravely.
Marissa viciously yanked Lily's hair, causing my daughter to cry out in sudden pain.
"I will pull this trigger, Marcus, I swear to God I will do it," Marissa threatened.
I slowly lowered my weapon and placed it carefully onto the wet gravel.
My trainees emerged from their defensive positions, aiming their rifles squarely at Marissa.
"Tell your team to back off, or she dies right here," Marissa commanded.
"Lower your weapons," I ordered my team, keeping my eyes entirely focused on my frantic ex-wife.
Tessa hesitated for a fraction of a second before lowering her rifle toward the ground.
"You cannot escape this, Marissa," I said, keeping my voice incredibly steady and calm.
"The FBI has the cartel weapon logs, and federal agents are raiding the Hawthorne estate right now."
Marissa laughed, a wild, unhinged sound that echoed terribly across the quiet compound.
"Arthur has enough money to buy his way out of federal prison," she claimed desperately.
"But if I bring him the flash drive and the girl, he promised to forgive my mistakes."
I pushed Bradley forward, forcing him to his knees in the mud halfway between us.
"Arthur does not care about you, Marissa," I told her firmly.
"He sent his own son to lead a suicidal assault because you are all completely expendable to him."
Bradley looked up at his stepmother with wide, terrified eyes.
"She is lying, Marissa, my dad already boarded a private jet to Mexico an hour ago!" Bradley screamed.
"He completely abandoned all of us to face the FBI alone!"
Marissa's manic smile instantly vanished, replaced by a look of absolute, crushing betrayal.
Her hand trembled violently, and the silver revolver wavered away from Lily's head for a split second.
That single second was all the time Tessa Vale needed to act.
Tessa fired a specialized beanbag round from her shotgun directly into Marissa's chest.
The kinetic force threw Marissa violently backward into the infirmary hallway.
She dropped the revolver and collapsed onto the floor, gasping frantically for air.
Lily broke free and sprinted across the wet gravel, throwing herself into my protective arms.
I hugged her tightly, completely ignoring the cartel enforcers who were still surrounding us.
The enforcers looked at their defeated leaders and slowly began to drop their weapons in surrender.
The terrifying standoff was finally over, but the night was far from finished.

My radio hissed loudly before a deep, heavily accented voice broke through the static.
"You handled those pathetic amateurs very well, Marcus, but I am afraid you have something that belongs to me."
