Chapter 6 - No Honor Among Thieves

Richard stared at the barrel of the gun, letting out a cruel, bitter laugh.

He mocked Catherine, telling her she was too much of a coward to pull the trigger.

Catherine stepped closer, her finger tightening dangerously on the trigger.

She screamed that she deserved that money after putting up with him for thirty years.

She demanded the account numbers one last time.

Richard smiled maliciously, his eyes completely devoid of affection.

He told her that there was no offshore money left to steal.

He revealed that I had hacked into those accounts during my forensic audit.

I had drained every single penny and donated it to a charity for abuse survivors.

Catherine dropped the gun in absolute, paralyzing despair.

She fell against the hallway wall, realizing she was completely destitute.

The doors to the elevator violently slid open.

A dozen heavily armed SWAT officers poured into the hallway with their rifles raised.

They ordered Richard and Catherine to get on the ground immediately.

Richard complied, pressing his face into the carpet as they clamped cold steel cuffs on his wrists.

Catherine managed to scramble toward the emergency exit in the ensuing chaos.

She slipped down the stairwell, running for her life while her husband took the fall.

She burst out of the building's service exit and sprinted down the dark alley.

She pulled out a secret burner phone and desperately dialed Madison's number.

She told her daughter to pack the hidden emergency jewels from the floor safe.

She planned to sell the diamonds on the black market and buy them plane tickets to Europe.

Madison answered the phone with a sickeningly sweet tone.

She told her mother that she was already at the airport terminal.

She cheerfully revealed that she had sold the jewels hours ago for a solo ticket.

Madison hung up the phone, abandoning her mother on the dirty city streets.
