Chapter 5 - The Trap Snaps Shut

A live video feed of my face appeared on the laptop screen.
I was sitting safely in my secure office, hundreds of miles away.
I smiled warmly at the camera, showing off my perfect new tooth.
I asked Richard how he liked the penthouse apartment.
He screamed at the screen, demanding that I transfer the money immediately to save his life.
I calmly explained that I had absolutely no intention of saving him.
I told him that the apartment he just broke into did not belong to me.
I revealed that it was the private residence of the local chief of police.
Richard's eyes widened as the horrifying reality of the situation crashed down on him.
He had just committed a violent home invasion at the worst possible location in the city.
The blaring sound of multiple police sirens echoed from the street below.
Richard realized I had masterminded this entire scenario to trap him.
He turned around and sprinted toward the broken front door to escape.
He burst out into the hallway, desperate to reach the emergency stairwell.
A figure stepped out of the shadows, blocking his only path to freedom.
It was Catherine.
Her hair was a messy disaster, and her soft cardigan was torn.
She was holding a loaded revolver with her hands shaking violently.
She pointed the weapon directly at her husband's chest.
She told Richard that she was not going to let him drag her down with him.

She demanded the secret passwords to his hidden offshore emergency accounts.
She planned to take the remaining cash and leave him to rot in prison alone.
