Chapter 8 - The Hostile Takeover

Spencer stared at the hidden camera lens, his face turning an unhealthy shade of pale gray.
His grand blackmail plot was based on a pathetic lie, and he had just committed federal extortion on tape.
"You set me up," Spencer whispered, his voice trembling with genuine terror.
"You set yourself up the moment you brought your mistress into my world," I corrected him.
Spencer's arrogant pride completely shattered, and his knees buckled beneath his weight.
He fell to the floor, grasping desperately at the hem of my beautiful crimson gown.
"Phoebe, please, I am begging you to give me one more chance," he sobbed pathetically.
"I will leave Paisley tonight, I will sign whatever you want, just don't send me to prison."
I looked down at the man I had once loved unconditionally, feeling absolutely nothing for him now.
"You are a coward, Spencer, and you always will be," I told him fiercely.
I pulled a second set of documents from Carter's hands and dropped them onto the floor in front of him.
"These are the hostile takeover documents, officially transferring all your assets to the Harrell Corporation."
I signed the final page right in front of him, sealing his complete and total financial ruin.
Spencer lost his company, his wealth, his reputation, and his freedom in one single, brutal stroke.
He looked down at the signed papers, realizing his life of luxury was officially over forever.
A dark, violent look suddenly flashed across his tear-stained eyes.
He realized he had absolutely nothing left to lose, making him incredibly dangerous.

Spencer leaped up from the floor and grabbed a heavy, crystal glass decanter from the nearby bar.
He lunged directly at me with a feral scream, swinging the heavy glass wildly toward my head.
