Chapter 2 - The Transformation

I stared at the tablet in absolute shock as the helicopter lifted off from the ruined lawn.
My father had been secretly funding the very man who broke my heart every single day.
"I wanted to protect you from the shadows, Phoebe," my father explained softly over the video call.
"But tonight, we are going to drag Spencer Conway into the light."
The helicopter soared over the glittering skyline of the city, heading toward the financial district.
We landed on the private rooftop helipad of the Harrell Tower.
Carter escorted me down into a luxurious, sprawling penthouse suite.
A massive team of professional stylists and makeup artists was already waiting for me in the living room.
They did not ask any questions as they immediately went to work.
They stripped away my old, worn navy-blue dress and threw it into the trash.
They washed my hair, painted my face, and transformed me into a completely different woman.
Two hours later, they zipped me into a breathtaking, custom-made crimson evening gown.
The silk fabric hugged my curves perfectly, making me look incredibly powerful and dangerous.
Carter walked into the room carrying a black velvet box secured by a biometric lock.
He pressed his thumb to the scanner, and the box clicked open to reveal a massive diamond necklace.
"Your father wanted you to wear this tonight," Carter whispered, fastening the cold jewels around my neck.
I looked at myself in the full-length mirror and barely recognized the stunning heiress staring back at me.
I was no longer the pathetic, humble wife who begged for crumbs of affection.
Carter led me down to the underground parking garage, where a sleek silver limousine was waiting.
We pulled up to the grand entrance of the luxury hotel where the Apex Group gala was taking place.
I stepped out of the limousine, and the flashing lights of the paparazzi immediately blinded me.
I walked confidently into the grand lobby, my high heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.
As I approached the ballroom doors, I heard Spencer's arrogant voice echoing loudly.
He was desperately trying to impress a very wealthy, highly influential foreign investor.
Spencer laughed and introduced Paisley to the investor as his beautiful future wife.

The wealthy investor turned around, and my blood ran completely cold.
The man Spencer was trying to impress was my older brother, Julian Harrell.
