Chapter 6 - The Unborn Secret

The entire ballroom gasped collectively at Paisley's desperate, shocking confession.
Spencer looked completely paralyzed, staring at Paisley's stomach as if an alien were about to burst out of it.
"A child?" Spencer whispered, the reality of his ruined life crashing down around him.
I felt a sharp, agonizing pain in my chest, a final lingering sting of my failed marriage.
He had been building a secret, alternative family while I sat quietly at home trying to win his love.
Carter noticed my momentary hesitation and gently placed a warm, supportive hand on my lower back.
His quiet strength grounded me, reminding me that I was no longer a victim in this story.
I stood incredibly tall, pulling a crisp white legal envelope from Carter's inside jacket pocket.
I walked right up to Spencer and slapped the envelope firmly against his chest.
"These are your immediate divorce papers, drafted by the best lawyers in the country," I stated coldly.
Spencer grabbed the envelope mechanically, his eyes darting frantically around the hostile room.
He refused to open the envelope, shaking his head in stubborn, desperate denial.
"You cannot do this to me, Phoebe," he hissed, his tone shifting from pleading to vicious.
"I built this company with my own bare hands, and I will not let you take it away."
He took a step closer to me, his face twisting into an ugly, threatening sneer.
"If you try to ruin me, I will destroy your precious family name in the press tomorrow," Spencer warned.
My father laughed out loud, finding the threat absolutely comical.
"You have nothing left to threaten us with, you pathetic boy," my father mocked him.
Spencer smiled wickedly, revealing the true darkness hiding behind his handsome face.

"I know the dark secret about what your father did to your mother twenty years ago," Spencer whispered to me.
"And I have the documents to prove it."
