Chapter 8 - The Explosive Exit

I froze completely, knowing the absolute slightest shift in my weight would trigger the explosive charge.

I carefully inspected the floorboards in the dim moonlight and identified a crude but deadly pressure mine.

Vanessa's mercenaries had rigged the office to eliminate anyone investigating the bank director's murder.

I slowly reached toward the desk and grabbed a heavy, solid bronze statue of a horse.

I took a deep breath, calculating the exact timing required to survive the blast radius.

I violently shoved the bronze statue onto the exact spot where my boot rested, simultaneously launching myself backward.

I dove horizontally through the massive plate glass window just as the pressure device detonated.

The explosion obliterated the home office, sending a massive fireball and thousands of glass shards rocketing into the night sky.

I landed hard on the perfectly manicured lawn, miraculously surviving the blast with only minor cuts and bruises.

I scrambled to my feet and ran to the truck, throwing myself into the driver's seat.

"Hold on!" I yelled, flooring the accelerator and speeding away before the local police could respond to the explosion.

We merged onto the dark highway, putting miles between us and the burning mansion.

I looked over my shoulder to check on my family, hoping the explosion had not terrified them too badly.

Laura was pale and shaking, but she nodded to let me know she was uninjured.

However, Emily was slumped against the backseat window, sweating profusely and shivering uncontrollably.

"Emily, what is wrong?" I asked frantically, turning on the interior dome light.

She clutched her small stomach tightly and coughed, revealing a tiny, horrifying speck of blood on her pale lips.

I realized with absolute, mind-numbing horror that Emily was displaying the exact same symptoms Caroline had before she died.
