Chapter 3 - The Fake Guests

The phone slipped from my grasp, falling onto the perfectly manicured grass of the terrace.

Vanessa had stolen everything my deceased wife had worked so hard to leave for our daughter.

"Take Emily to my truck right now, Laura," I commanded my sister without taking my eyes off Vanessa.

Laura nodded, scooping Emily up and turning toward the main exit of the lodge.

Suddenly, three massive men in expensive grey suits stepped out from the crowd and blocked the garden exit.

They did not look like wedding guests.

They had the distinct, cold posture of hired mercenaries or private security contractors.

"Who are these men?" I demanded, my muscles tensing as my combat instincts fully awakened.

"I told you I invited my uncles to the wedding, Andrew," Vanessa said, walking slowly toward the men.

"Though technically, they are my business associates who helped me orchestrate this little financial maneuver."

The tallest man stepped forward, reaching inside his tailored suit jacket.

"We cannot let you leave just yet, Colonel Mercer," the man said in a deep, gravelly voice.

The real wedding guests finally panicked, scrambling away from the aisle and flooding back into the main lodge.

Within seconds, the garden was completely empty except for me, my family, Vanessa, and her hired muscle.

"You have the money, Vanessa, so let my family walk away," I reasoned, calculating the distance between me and the closest threat.

"There is one minor complication with the wire transfer," Vanessa sighed, crossing her arms.

"The offshore bank flagged the transaction because of the high amount, and they require a secondary biometric authorization."

She pulled a secure digital tablet from the nearby altar table and tossed it onto the grass at my feet.

"I need your thumbprint on that scanner to finalize the deposit, Andrew."

"I am not signing away my daughter's future," I growled, stepping defensively in front of Laura and Emily.

The tall man pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket and racked the slide with a terrifying click.

"You do not have a choice, Colonel," the man sneered, aiming the weapon directly at my nine-year-old daughter.
