Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

"Emily, are you inside that room?" I asked, my voice echoing slightly in the narrow service corridor.

A small sniffle came from the other side of the heavy wooden door.

"Daddy, please do not be mad at me," her trembling voice replied.

I pressed my shoulder against the wood and realized the deadbolt had been engaged from the outside.

My military training kicked in instantly, replacing my wedding-day anxiety with cold, calculated focus.

I took a step back and drove the heel of my dress shoe directly into the locking mechanism.

The wooden frame splintered loudly as the door flew open and banged against the laundry room wall.

Emily was sitting on the cold tile floor next to a washing machine.

Her beautiful pale-blue dress was wrinkled, and her flower basket lay tipped over beside her.

Tears streamed down her cheeks, ruining the light makeup my sister had carefully applied earlier.

I dropped to my knees, completely ignoring the dust on my expensive tuxedo, and pulled her into a tight embrace.

"Are you hurt, sweetheart?" I asked, checking her arms and face for any injuries.

She shook her head and buried her face into my shoulder.

"Vanessa told me to come in here and wait until the ceremony was completely over," Emily whispered.

I felt a sudden, icy chill run down my spine.

"Why would she tell you to do that?" I asked gently.

Emily wiped her eyes and looked up at me with absolute heartbreak.

"She said her important investors were attending the wedding today, and they did not know you had baggage."

My mind went entirely blank for a fraction of a second.

"She called you baggage?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet tone.

Emily nodded, pointing to the heavy padlock resting on the nearby shelf.

"She said I was an ugly reminder of your dead wife, and I would ruin the aesthetic of the wedding photos."

Every single ounce of love I thought I held for Vanessa evaporated in that exact moment.

I stood up, holding my daughter's hand firmly in mine.

"There will be no ceremony," I said, my voice steady and resolute.

We walked out of the service corridor and marched directly toward the beautiful garden terrace.

The string quartet was already playing the bridal march, and guests were turning their heads toward the aisle.

Vanessa stood at the beginning of the white runner, looking absolutely stunning in her designer gown.

When she saw me walking toward her with Emily, her fake smile faltered for just a second.

I stopped right in front of her, ignoring the confused murmurs of the two hundred guests.

"The wedding is entirely canceled, and I want you out of my life," I announced loudly.

Vanessa did not look shocked, embarrassed, or heartbroken.

Instead, a wicked, triumphant smirk slowly spread across her perfectly painted lips.

"You can cancel the party, Andrew, but you cannot cancel the marriage."

She pulled a folded piece of paper from her bouquet and held it up.

"The judge signed our confidential marriage certificate an hour ago, making me your legal wife."
