Chapter 4 - The Tactical Escape

Seeing a weapon pointed at my child flipped a switch deep inside my brain.

I was no longer a heartbroken groom; I was a highly trained soldier neutralizing a hostile threat.

I kicked the heavy, wooden altar table forward with explosive force.

The table slammed into the armed man's knees, knocking him completely off balance.

Before he could pull the trigger, I closed the distance and drove my fist directly into his throat.

The man gagged and dropped the pistol, collapsing onto the grass in a heap.

I spun around and delivered a devastating roundhouse kick to the second man's chest, sending him crashing through the wedding chairs.

"Run to the tree line, Laura!" I screamed, grabbing the dropped pistol from the ground.

Laura sprinted toward the dense Colorado pine forest, dragging Emily safely behind her.

The third mercenary drew his weapon, but I fired a warning shot that shattered the stone fountain beside him.

He dove for cover, giving me the precious seconds I needed to retreat.

"Do not let them get away!" Vanessa shrieked furiously, abandoning her calm facade.

I ran backward, keeping my weapon trained on the mercenaries until I reached the safety of the dense trees.

I caught up with Laura and Emily, who were hiding behind a massive boulder.

"We cannot go to the truck, they will have the parking lot heavily guarded," I whispered, checking the pistol's magazine.

"Where do we go, Andrew?" Laura asked, trembling as she held Emily tightly.

"My old Army Ranger buddy, Marcus, has an off-the-grid cabin about three miles up this mountain," I explained.

We began our grueling hike through the unforgiving terrain, relying on my survival training to navigate the woods.

Emily did not complain once, proving how incredibly strong and brave she truly was.

We hiked for over an hour, the sun beginning to set and casting long, dark shadows across the mountain.

I finally saw the small, wooden roof of Marcus's cabin peeking through the distant pine needles.

A sudden, mechanical buzzing sound echoed above us.

I looked up through the tree canopy and saw a high-tech thermal-tracking drone hovering directly over our position.
