Chapter 6 - The Ghost from the Past

I forced myself to spit the remaining coffee onto the wooden floorboards before the sedative could fully take hold.
I feigned a complete collapse, falling heavily onto the rug and allowing my eyes to roll back.
Marcus sighed heavily, stepping closer to bind my wrists with the thick plastic zip ties.
The moment he knelt beside me, I exploded upward with every ounce of adrenaline left in my body.
I swept his legs out from under him, sending him crashing violently against the heavy coffee table.
Marcus was a trained Ranger, and he recovered quickly, throwing a brutal left hook toward my jaw.
I dodged the punch and drove my knee into his ribs, hearing a satisfying crack echo in the small cabin.
We grappled intensely, breaking furniture and smashing lamps as the brutal hand-to-hand combat raged on.
Laura screamed, shielding Emily in the corner of the room while I fought for our lives.
I finally managed to slip behind Marcus, locking my arm securely around his neck in a flawless sleeper hold.
He thrashed wildly for a few seconds before his eyes rolled back and he lost consciousness.
I lowered him to the floor, panting heavily, and used his own zip ties to bind his wrists and ankles tightly.
"Are you okay, Andrew?" Laura cried, rushing over to help me stand up.
"I am fine, but we need to figure out how Vanessa knew to buy him off," I replied, walking over to Marcus's open laptop.
I bypassed his simple security password and opened a hidden folder sitting directly on the desktop.
Inside was a massive intelligence dossier Marcus had clearly compiled on Vanessa before deciding to betray me.
Her real name was Victoria Vance, and she was an international fugitive wanted for corporate espionage.
I scrolled further down and found a sub-folder labeled with the name of my deceased wife, Caroline.
I opened the medical files inside, my blood turning to absolute ice as I read the toxicology reports.

The documents proved definitively that Caroline did not die of a sudden, natural illness five years ago.
She had been systematically poisoned by a woman matching Vanessa's exact physical description.
