Chapter 9 - The Speedboat Chase

I carried Leo tightly against my chest and sprinted blindly through the burning steam.
I burst through the rear exit doors and out onto the wooden dock just as the warehouse violently detonated behind us.
The massive shockwave threw us forward, plunging us forcefully into the freezing, dark river water.
I fought the strong current, keeping Leo's head safely above the surface as debris rained down around us.
Through the smoke and flames, I saw Marcus speeding away in a sleek motorboat, holding a gun to Emily's head.
A police tactical boat arrived seconds later, pulling Leo and me out of the freezing water.
I pointed furiously at the fleeing vessel and demanded the police pursue my brother immediately.
The police boat roared to life, its massive engines tearing across the river in hot pursuit.
The chase was incredibly fast and dangerous, the boats weaving recklessly through heavy shipping traffic.
We rapidly gained ground, pulling up alongside Marcus's fleeing boat.
Marcus panicked, turning his weapon away from the police and aiming it directly at Emily to use her as a human shield.
He screamed that he would kill her if we did not back off entirely.
Emily looked at me with fierce determination, completely refusing to be a victim any longer.
She violently bit down on Marcus's arm, causing him to scream and drop his weapon.

Emily lunged forward, grabbed the boat's steering wheel with both hands, and forcefully yanked it to the right.
The speedboat veered sharply off course and crashed brutally into a massive concrete bridge piling.
