Chapter 6 - The Hostage Situation

I slowly opened my fingers and let my gun clatter onto the concrete floor.

Laura kicked the weapon far out of my reach and violently shoved me forward.

Marcus smiled broadly, clapping his hands together as if welcoming a guest to a party.

"Arthur, so glad you could finally join our little family reunion," Marcus mocked.

Greg walked in through the front doors, holding a digital biometric scanner and a laptop.

"The fake trust documents are already notarized, we just need his thumbprint to initiate the global wire transfer," Greg explained.

Marcus walked over to Leo and casually rested the heavy steel crowbar against my grandson's small shoulder.

"Put your thumb on the scanner, Arthur, or the boy loses his arm," Marcus threatened.

Emily screamed for me to just do it, begging me to give them whatever they wanted.

I looked at my brother, realizing that giving them the money would not guarantee our survival.

Once the accounts were drained, we would be entirely useless to them.

"I will give you the fingerprint, but let me hold my grandson one last time to calm him down," I requested, keeping my voice steady.

Marcus chuckled arrogantly, assuming he had completely broken my spirit.

"Fine, you have ten seconds to say goodbye," Marcus agreed, gesturing for Laura to lower her weapon slightly.

I knelt beside Leo and wrapped my arms tightly around his trembling little body.

I whispered in his ear that everything was going to be alright.

As I hugged him, I felt Leo slip something cold and metallic into my palm.

"Mommy's knife," Leo whispered incredibly softly.
