Chapter 8 - The Hunt

The freezing river water aggressively shocks Leandro’s system as he plunges into the dark depths.
He swims underwater for as long as his burning lungs will allow, entirely desperate to escape Maribel’s sights.
When he finally breaches the surface, he is miles downstream in the industrial district.
He drags himself onto the muddy riverbank, his expensive suit completely ruined and soaked in blood.
Leandro steals a cheap burner phone from a sleeping security guard's desk nearby.
He desperately dials the highly secure number Daphne gave him for emergencies.
“Leandro, thank God, are you safe?” Daphne answers on the very first ring.
“I am alive, but Maribel killed her own father and fully controls the entire syndicate now,” Leandro breathes heavily.
“She has completely taken over the hospital, Leandro, we had to run again,” Daphne warns him.
“Where did you hide my mother?” Leandro asks, his protective instincts flaring fiercely.
“We are hiding inside the old abandoned cathedral in the South Ward,” Daphne replies.
Leandro steals a running delivery motorcycle and speeds recklessly through the dark city streets.
He finally arrives at the towering, gothic cathedral, pushing open the heavy wooden doors.
The church is entirely silent, lit only by dozens of flickering prayer candles.
“Daphne, I am here, it is safe to come out now,” Leandro calls out softly.

A figure steps out from the shadows of the main altar, clapping slowly and mockingly.
It is Maribel, holding the decorative silver chain completely soaked in fresh blood.
