Chapter 9 - The Final Betrayal

My mother pressed the red button a second time, her arrogant smile slowly fading into confusion.

She stared at the plastic remote, tapping it violently against the mahogany desk.

"The explosives in the basement are not going to detonate, Mrs. Sterling," Julian stated calmly.

Julian pulled a small, severed wire from his pocket and tossed it onto the floor.

"I disabled the primary receiver when we first walked into the house," he revealed.

My mother's face turned completely pale as she realized she was entirely out of options.

"You are going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal prison," I told her, lowering my gun.

"I will make sure you never see a single dime of my father's money."

The sound of multiple police sirens suddenly filled the quiet suburban neighborhood.

Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the large windows of the study.

"I am your mother, Callie, you cannot do this to me!" she panicked, dropping the useless detonator.

"You stopped being my mother the moment you hired a killer to drug my wedding champagne," I replied coldly.

Heavily armed police officers burst through the front door and swarmed into the study.

They handcuffed my screaming mother and dragged her roughly out of the house.

A senior detective approached Julian and me, taking our statements and securing the digital evidence.

"We found Axton Callaway's body at the warehouse, exactly as you described," the detective confirmed.

"Your sister is out of surgery and is expected to make a full recovery."

I let out a massive, shuddering breath, feeling the crushing weight of the night finally lift from my shoulders.

I had survived the most terrifying ordeal of my life and completely destroyed the monsters hiding in my family.

Julian walked me outside to his car, wrapping a warm blanket over my ruined wedding dress.

"It is officially over, Callie," Julian promised softly, opening the passenger door for me.

I looked at him, feeling a genuine sense of safety and profound gratitude.

"Thank you for saving my life tonight," I whispered.

We drove away from the flashing police lights, leaving the dark nightmare completely behind us.
