Chapter 4 - The Ransom Demand

Axton held the phone close to his face, his expression completely devoid of human emotion.
"You really thought you could just run away from me, Callie?" Axton asked mockingly.
I stared at the screen, my blood running cold at the sight of my sister bound to a chair.
"Let her go, Axton!" I yelled, my voice echoing in the quiet car.
"Mila outlived her usefulness the moment you found out about our arrangement," he replied smoothly.
He pointed a silver handgun directly at Mila's trembling head.
"I need you to return to the hotel suite right now," Axton commanded.
"If you involve the police or try to run with Julian, I will pull this trigger."
Julian grabbed the phone from my hand and glared at the screen.
"You will not get a single dime if you murder them both, Axton," Julian warned sharply.
Axton laughed, a hollow and terrifying sound that chilled me to the bone.
"I do not need them both to die to get the money, Mr. Vance," Axton sneered.
"I just need my grieving wife to sign the final insurance transfer documents before she mysteriously vanishes."
He gave us exactly one hour to meet him at an abandoned warehouse by the docks.
The video call abruptly ended, leaving us in suffocating silence.
"We cannot go there, Callie, it is a suicide trap," Julian stated firmly, gripping the steering wheel.
"I have to save her, Julian, she is still my sister," I argued through my tears.
"She conspired to murder you for money," he reminded me brutally.
"I do not care, I will not let him execute her because of me," I insisted.
Julian sighed heavily and turned the car toward the industrial district.
He handed me a small, heavy object from the glove compartment.
It was a loaded pistol.
"If we are doing this, you need to be prepared to pull the trigger," Julian warned me.
We arrived at the docks and parked near a massive, rusted shipping warehouse.

The giant metal doors were completely chained shut from the outside.
Suddenly, the deafening sound of a gunshot echoed from inside the building.
