Chapter 2 - The Stranger's Card

I backed away from the bed as Axton slowly swung his legs over the edge.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

The dizziness in my head was growing worse with every passing second.

"What did you put in my drink?" I demanded, my voice slurring slightly.

Axton stood up and walked toward me with a calm, terrifying smile.

"Just something to help you relax on our special night," he replied smoothly.

I turned around and ran frantically toward the heavy suite doors.

I grabbed the brass handle and pulled, but the deadbolt was electronically locked from his master key.

"You cannot leave, sweetheart," Axton said, stepping closer to my trembling body.

I needed a weapon or a way to call for help immediately.

I rushed toward the velvet chair and grabbed my heavy wedding dress.

I remembered the tall blond stranger who had approached me during the cocktail hour.

He had slipped something into the hidden pocket of my gown before walking away.

I shoved my hand into the silk fabric and pulled out a small black business card.

It had a single phone number printed on it and the name Julian Vance.

Axton lunged forward and grabbed my wrist with brutal force.

He yanked the business card from my fingers and laughed darkly.

"Julian is a very persistent man," Axton muttered, tearing the card into pieces.

I used my free hand to grab a heavy crystal vase from the entryway table.

I smashed it viciously against the side of Axton's head.

He grunted in pain and released my wrist to grab his bleeding temple.

I unlocked the door manually, threw it open, and sprinted into the empty hotel corridor.

I ran toward the elevators just as the heavy doors chimed and slid open.

I collided directly into the chest of the tall blond stranger from the wedding.

"We need to go right now," Julian said, pulling me into the elevator.
