Chapter 5 - The Deadly Game

Julian kicked the heavy chains, but they refused to budge.

I aimed the pistol at the padlock and fired a single shot, shattering the metal mechanism.

We pushed the massive doors open and rushed into the dark, echoing warehouse.

The space was filled with towering stacks of wooden shipping crates and broken machinery.

"Mila!" I screamed, desperately searching the shadows for my sister.

A bright spotlight suddenly blinded us from the far end of the room.

Axton stood on a metal catwalk above us, holding the smoking gun in his right hand.

"You are exactly on time, my beautiful bride," Axton taunted from the high vantage point.

I squinted through the glaring light and saw Mila slumped over in the chair below him.

She was completely motionless, and a dark pool of blood was forming on the concrete floor.

"You killed her!" I shrieked, aiming my pistol directly at his chest.

"She was a greedy liability, Callie," Axton sighed, looking genuinely bored by the situation.

"Now, put the gun down and sign the papers, or I will shoot your new friend Julian."

Julian stepped in front of me, raising his own weapon toward the catwalk.

"It is over, Axton, I already sent all the evidence of Elena's murder to the FBI," Julian bluffed.

Axton hesitated for a fraction of a second, his arrogant smile faltering slightly.

In that brief moment of distraction, the supposedly dead body of my sister suddenly leaped from the chair.

Mila tackled Axton from behind, screaming in absolute rage.

The blood on the floor was completely fake, a staged trick to catch him off guard.

"Run, Callie, he was planning to kill us both anyway!" Mila yelled as they struggled for the gun.

I watched in horror as my husband and my sister fought violently on the narrow metal platform.

The gun went off a second time, the sound ricocheting violently off the metal walls.

Both of them stopped moving entirely.

Axton slowly stood up, holding his bleeding side, while Mila tumbled backward over the edge of the railing.
