Chapter 8 - The Crash

The burning wreckage at the bottom of the ravine provided the perfect cover for their survival.
Gideon knew that Douglas would soon receive a remote confirmation that the car had been destroyed, leading him to believe they were dead.
They had to use this brief window of presumed death to ambush Douglas before the private jet took off.
They hiked through the rugged terrain for twenty grueling minutes until they reached a small rural highway.
Gideon flagged down a passing utility truck, bribing the terrified driver with a massive wire transfer to take them straight to the airfield.
During the tense ride, Gideon used his burner phone to contact a high-ranking FBI agent who owed him a life debt.
He transmitted the forged documents, the footage of Sarah at the bank, and the coordinates of the airstrip.
The agent promised that a heavily armed tactical team was being scrambled, but they were still thirty minutes away.
Gwen felt a suffocating panic setting in, knowing the jet was scheduled to depart in less than twenty minutes.
They arrived at the perimeter fence of the private airstrip, spotting the sleek Gulfstream jet fueling on the tarmac.
Gideon and Gwen sneaked into the adjacent maintenance hangar, searching for anything they could use to stop the flight.
Gideon found a heavy transport tug and hot-wired the ignition, aiming the massive machine directly toward the runway.
As the jet's engines began to whine with takeoff power, Gideon slammed the tug's accelerator to the floor.
He crashed the heavy tug directly into the jet's front landing gear, crippling the aircraft and sending sparks flying across the concrete.
The jet shuddered and powered down, the boarding stairs violently deploying as the cabin doors flew open.
Douglas stormed out onto the stairs, a look of absolute, murderous rage distorting his face as he aimed his weapon.
He fired two rapid shots, hitting Gideon in the shoulder and sending him collapsing to the cold tarmac.
Gwen screamed, diving behind a metal barricade as Douglas slowly walked down the stairs, completely unhinged.

He aimed the gun squarely at Gwen's head, telling her that if she wouldn't die in a crash, he would do it the old-fashioned way.
Suddenly, a massive spotlight from a circling police helicopter blinded Douglas, and a sniper's laser sight settled perfectly onto his chest.
