Chapter 5 - The Inside Man

Douglas smiled with cold detachment, the silencer on his weapon perfectly steady as he looked down at them.

Toby was crying silently, clutching his dinosaur backpack while his father gripped his small shoulder entirely too hard.

Gwen fell to her knees, begging Douglas to take whatever he wanted but to let her son go.

Douglas casually explained that he didn't want the children for sentimental reasons; they were simply the ultimate leverage.

If Gwen went to the police or the FBI about the forged syndicate loan, Douglas would ensure she never saw Toby or Maisie again.

He demanded that Gideon transfer his remaining fifty percent of the company shares into a blind trust immediately.

Gideon slowly raised his hands, subtly pressing a silent panic button concealed on the inside of his watch strap.

He tried to stall, arguing that a massive corporate transfer would take hours to verify and would trigger federal flags.

Douglas scoffed, tossing a fully prepared electronic tablet down the stairs, demanding Gideon use his thumbprint to authorize the transaction.

As Gideon picked up the device, he noticed a tiny, blinking red light on the tablet's casing.

It wasn't just a transfer document; it was a remote detonator linked to the explosive charges Sarah had planted in the basement.

Douglas intended to get the shares, leave with the kids, and blow the house to ash with Gwen and Gideon inside.

Gideon looked at Gwen, giving her a microscopic nod that communicated a desperate, unspoken plan.

He pressed his thumb against the screen, but intentionally used the wrong finger to trigger an error message.

While Douglas was distracted by the failing authorization beep, a loud crash erupted from the rear of the house.

A tactical extraction team, summoned by Gideon's watch, shattered the floor-to-ceiling windows and flooded the living room.

Douglas cursed, blindly firing a shot that shattered a vase near Gwen's head before dragging Toby back into the hallway.

Gideon rushed the stairs, but by the time he reached the second floor, the balcony doors were wide open.

A helicopter was already lifting off from the expansive back lawn, the violent downwash tearing the garden apart.

Through the glass of the chopper, Sarah looked down at them and held up little Maisie's favorite stuffed animal, smiling wickedly.
