Chapter 2 - The Unwelcome Guest

Gideon immediately locked the screen of his computer and shoved the printed evidence into a hidden drawer under his desk.

He could hear the heavy, metallic pounding echoing from the front gate all the way into the study.

Gwen rushed down the hallway in her pajamas, her eyes wide with sheer panic as she clutched a blanket.

She whispered frantically, asking if that was her husband out there in the rain.

Gideon nodded, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder while telling her to stay hidden upstairs with the children.

He walked to the entryway, disabled the alarm, and opened the massive oak door just as Douglas was winding up to smash the intercom.

Douglas smirked, dropping the crowbar onto the wet pavement with a loud clatter.

He smoothly invited himself inside, shaking the rain from his expensive tailored coat as if he owned the place.

Douglas looked around the luxurious foyer, casually mentioning that he knew Gwen was hiding somewhere in the house.

Gideon kept his composure, demanding to know what Douglas wanted at this hour of the night.

Douglas pulled a folded legal document from his inner pocket and slapped it onto the entryway table.

It was a buyout agreement, offering Gideon pennies on the dollar for his half of their tech empire.

Douglas warned that if Gideon didn't sign it immediately, he would leak fabricated documents to the SEC, framing Gideon for massive corporate fraud.

Gideon realized that Douglas was trying to liquidate the company and flee before the shadow syndicate came to collect the ten-million-dollar debt.

He firmly refused to sign, telling Douglas to get out of his house before he called the police.

Douglas let out a dark, mocking laugh as he turned back toward the open front door.

He said Gideon was making a terrible mistake, and that he wasn't acting alone in this flawless plan.

Through the rain, Gideon saw the passenger window of the black SUV slowly roll down.

A woman leaned out into the streetlights, blowing a sarcastic kiss toward the house.

Gwen, who had peeked around the staircase corner, gasped loudly as she recognized the mistress.

It was Sarah, her own sister, the one person she had trusted with all her banking passwords.
