Chapter 3 - The Face in the Window

The sight of her sister sitting in Douglas's car sent a wave of nausea washing over Gwen.
Sarah had always been jealous, but helping to orchestrate the complete destruction of Gwen's life was a betrayal beyond comprehension.
Douglas chuckled at the sound of Gwen's gasp, shouting into the house that family always knows your weakest spots.
He turned on his heel, walked back to his vehicle, and drove off into the stormy night, leaving the sinister threat hanging in the air.
Gwen collapsed onto the bottom step of the staircase, burying her face in her trembling hands.
Gideon rushed to her side, explaining the forged syndicate loan he had discovered in the hidden archives.
He told her they needed to secure her original financial records immediately to prove she never signed that guarantor contract.
Gwen wiped her tears, remembering that she had kept a secret, physical backup of her early bank transfers in a safety deposit box downtown.
If they could retrieve those original stamped receipts, they could prove Douglas had fabricated the seed money narrative from day one.
They waited until the sun came up, leaving the children with Gideon's trusted head of security before racing to the downtown financial district.
The bank manager recognized Gwen immediately, offering a polite but incredibly confused smile.
Gwen nervously handed over her identification and the small brass key she had kept hidden for years.
The manager typed her information into the system, his brow furrowing as a red alert flashed on his monitor.
He looked up at them, his expression shifting from polite customer service to deep suspicion.
The manager informed them that Gwen's account had been permanently closed and the box emptied.
Gideon demanded to know who had authorized such a transaction without his client's physical presence.
The manager turned the monitor around to show them the security snapshot taken at the vault just yesterday afternoon.

The woman in the photo smiling confidently at the camera was Sarah, holding a perfectly forged passport with Gwen's name.
And standing right behind her in the vault, dressed in a bank uniform, was the head of Gideon's own cybersecurity team.
