Chapter 7 - The Hostage Situation

Nathan locked the heavy steel door behind him, trapping me inside the freezing, windowless server room.

He slowly walked toward me, a twisted and arrogant smile completely distorting the face of the man I once loved.

He mocked my pathetic attempt to play the hero, claiming that a failed medical dropout could never outsmart a brilliant doctor.

I kept my body positioned directly in front of the computer terminal, praying the data transfer would finish before he noticed it.

Nathan revealed that he had known about Detective Reynolds for weeks and had purposely fed him false information to trap us here.

He bragged that the Chief of Surgery had already initiated a lockdown, meaning Marcus and Reynolds were currently surrounded by corrupt police outside the building.

The computer screen behind me quietly flashed green, indicating the master ledger had been successfully downloaded.

I subtly reached behind my back, pulled the silver flash drive from the port, and concealed it inside the sleeve of my scrubs.

Nathan pulled a sleek, black handgun from his coat pocket and aimed it directly at my chest.

He demanded that I hand over the drive, promising to make my death look like a tragic hospital suicide if I refused.

I stared at the barrel of the gun, realizing my husband was completely willing to murder me to protect his stolen life.

I told Nathan that the flash drive was heavily encrypted and would permanently delete all the files if he entered the wrong password.

I lied, claiming he needed my biometric fingerprint to unlock the data he so desperately wanted to destroy.

Nathan hesitated for a fraction of a second, his arrogant confidence faltering at the thought of losing control of the situation.

That momentary hesitation was all I needed to execute my desperate move.

I grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall bracket and violently smashed it into the master server rack beside me.

A massive shower of sparks erupted into the air, instantly plunging the entire floor into complete darkness.

The deafening wail of the fire alarm echoed through the hospital as the emergency sprinklers turned on.

In the chaotic confusion, a loud gunshot rang out in the pitch-black room.
