Chapter 4 - The Midnight Arrest

The blinding red and blue lights illuminated the entire diner as police officers stepped out of their vehicles.

My heart hammered against my ribs, convinced that Nathan had already figured out we were plotting against him.

Marcus grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the back exit of the kitchen before the officers could walk through the front door.

We sprinted through the dark, grease-stained alleyway and jumped over a rusted chain-link fence.

We managed to circle back to his parked car just as the officers began questioning the diner staff about my whereabouts.

Once we were safely miles away from the scene, I checked my phone and found dozens of missed calls from an unknown number.

I finally listened to the single voicemail left on my device, and the sound of Nathan's arrogant voice filled the silent car.

Nathan smugly informed me that he had just filed a police report accusing me of stealing his encrypted medical flash drive.

He warned me that if I did not return the drive to his new apartment by midnight, he would press felony theft charges against me.

He knew exactly what evidence Marcus had given me, and he was using the corrupt local police force to retrieve it.

Marcus slammed his hands against the steering wheel, realizing our timeline had just been violently accelerated.

We could not wait for a perfect opportunity to break into the Chief of Surgery's private estate.

We had to execute the dangerous infiltration tonight before the police issued a statewide warrant for my arrest.

Marcus drove to a dark, affluent neighborhood and parked several blocks away from the towering, gated mansion.

We crept through the thick bushes, easily bypassing the perimeter cameras using the blind spots Nathan had once foolishly complained about.

I typed the security code into the back patio door, praying that Nathan had not recently changed it.

The heavy door clicked open with a soft beep, granting us access to the luxurious, silent house.

We slipped into the private home office, but before I could open the filing cabinet, the heavy wooden doors swung shut behind us.
