Chapter 1 - The Secret Scholarship

The crisp autumn breeze suddenly felt like ice against my skin as I stared at the man standing before me.
His name was Marcus, a quiet classmate who had always been decent to me during those long study group sessions years ago.
He glanced around nervously to make sure none of the other graduating doctors were listening to us.
He told me that I needed to listen very carefully because my entire life was a carefully constructed lie.
I wiped a stray tear from my cheek, still clutching the thick manila envelope that held my unexpected divorce papers.
Marcus took a deep breath and revealed that Nathan had not paid a single dime in medical school tuition for the last three years.
He explained that my husband had won a prestigious, fully-funded academic scholarship during his second year of the program.
My mind went completely blank as the sheer weight of his words crashed into my fragile reality.
For three entire years, I had worked exhausting back-to-back shifts at a diner and a retail store, destroying my own health to pay for an education that was already free.
I desperately asked Marcus where all of my hard-earned money had actually gone if it was not paying for his classes.
He reached into his graduation robe and handed me a small, silver encrypted flash drive.
Marcus explained that Nathan had used my minimum-wage earnings to fund a lavish lifestyle and secure an expensive luxury apartment downtown.
He had not been living alone in that apartment during all those nights he claimed to be on call at the hospital.
Nathan had been living with Chloe, the wealthy and spoiled daughter of the hospital's powerful Chief of Surgery.
My heart shattered into a million pieces as I realized my entire marriage had been nothing but a cruel financial scam.
Before I could even process the devastating betrayal, heavy footsteps echoed loudly on the pavement behind me.

Two massive campus security guards suddenly grabbed my arms with bruising, unforgiving force.
They coldly informed me that Doctor Nathan had just reported a dangerous trespasser and ordered them to remove me from the premises immediately.
