Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Ally

The massive security guard caught Chloe before she hit the hardwood floor and gently laid her on the expensive rug.
I stared in absolute shock as the man pulled off his dark tactical mask to reveal a deeply scarred face.
He quickly untied the thick ropes binding Marcus and me to the heavy metal chairs.
The man introduced himself as Detective Reynolds, an undercover federal investigator who had been tracking the hospital's fraud for years.
He explained that local law enforcement was completely owned by the Chief of Surgery, which was why he had to infiltrate the private security team.
Reynolds told us that the ashes on the floor were completely useless, but they were not the only copies in existence.
He revealed that the Chief of Surgery kept a master digital ledger of every illegal transaction and botched surgery on a private server located inside the hospital.
We only had a small window of opportunity to access that server before Chloe woke up and alerted the entire corrupt network.
Reynolds escorted us out the back door just as the local corrupt police cruisers pulled into the grand driveway.
We climbed into his unmarked tactical vehicle and sped toward the towering hospital located in the center of the city.
Marcus tended to his bruised ribs while I mentally prepared myself to walk back into the place that had destroyed my life.
Reynolds handed me a specialized keycard, explaining that I would have to enter the server room alone because his biometric data would trigger an alarm.
He warned me that the server room was located on the same floor as the private VIP surgical suites.
I had to remain completely undetected, download the master ledger onto the flash drive, and get out within ten minutes.
We arrived at the hospital loading dock, and I slipped inside wearing a stolen set of blue medical scrubs.
I successfully navigated the sterile, quiet hallways, swiping the keycard to unlock the heavy steel door of the server room.
I plugged my drive into the main terminal and initiated the massive data transfer.

Just as the progress bar hit ninety-nine percent, the server room door suddenly slammed open.
Nathan stood in the doorway, staring at me with a cold, murderous rage burning in his eyes.
