Chapter 9 - The Hidden Truth

We immediately sped toward my massive beachfront property in La Jolla, escorted by three heavily armed police cruisers.

The sun was just beginning to rise over the ocean, casting a beautiful, deceptive light over the terrifying situation.

"What is actually in that safe, Samantha? Our father never told me everything," David asked urgently from the driver's seat.

I took a deep breath, finally ready to reveal the darkest secret our father had ever burdened me with.

"It isn't money, David, it is a massive ledger containing the names, accounts, and crimes of the entire syndicate," I confessed quietly.

Our father had stolen the highly encrypted ledger to protect our family, using it as absolute blackmail against the criminals.

Christopher had married me to find that exact ledger and sell it back to the syndicate to clear his massive debts.

We arrived at the luxurious property to find the heavy front gates violently smashed open by a heavy vehicle.

The police officers drew their weapons and carefully breached the front doors of the quiet house.

We followed closely behind, moving silently through the pristine hallways I had once called home.

The heavy steel door to my private office in the basement had been blown completely off its hinges.

Inside the wrecked office, Christopher was frantically trying to crack the massive floor safe with heavy tools.

Two armed syndicate mercenaries were standing over him, pointing their rifles directly at his head to motivate him.

"Hurry up, you idiot, or we will kill you right here!" one of the mercenaries barked angrily.

The police officers stormed into the room, shouting aggressive commands for everyone to drop their weapons immediately.

The mercenaries panicked and wildly opened fire, causing the officers to return fire in a deafening, chaotic shootout.

Both mercenaries were quickly neutralized, falling heavily to the carpeted floor.

Christopher huddled cowardly in the corner, completely terrified and begging for his pathetic life once again.

I walked over to him, looking down at the man who had tried to bury me alive for a book of secrets.

"You lost, Christopher, you have absolutely nothing left," I told him with cold, final authority.

The police dragged him away, completely securing the scene and confirming the dangerous ledger was still safe.
