Chapter 1 - The First Knock

The absolute darkness inside the coffin was suffocating, heavy, and smelled distinctly of wilting roses.

I lay perfectly still on the rigid silk lining, entirely unable to move even a single muscle in my body.

The heavy thud of the coffin hitting the bottom of the open grave sent a violent vibration through my paralyzed spine.

I heard Christopher and Pamela walking away, their footsteps crunching happily on the loose gravel above.

They were laughing.

They were actually laughing while they left me here to die.

Christopher, the man I had loved and trusted for nine years, had orchestrated my murder just to steal my inheritance.

And Pamela, my supposed best friend since college, had helped him execute the perfect, untraceable crime.

The first heavy scoop of dirt hit the wooden lid right above my face with a terrifying, muffled thud.

Panic flared in my chest, a desperate, burning need for oxygen starting to overwhelm my drug-addled brain.

I focused every ounce of my willpower on my right hand, demanding that my frozen fingers respond to my brain.

Above me, a dog began to bark wildly, its sharp claws scratching frantically against the polished wood of my casket.

"Barnaby, stop that right now and come here!" an older man’s voice yelled from the edge of the grave.

The dog refused to listen, continuing to dig furiously at the dirt covering the lid.

The adrenaline finally broke through the chemical paralysis gripping my nervous system.

I managed to lift my trembling fist just a few inches and struck the wooden lid above my face.

It was a weak, pathetic knock, but the dog instantly stopped barking.

"What was that?" the gravedigger murmured, his voice trembling slightly with sudden fear.

I gathered the absolute last shred of my physical strength and struck the wood a second time, much harder.

The silence that followed was heavy and terrifying, stretching on for several agonizing seconds.

"Zachary! Come back here immediately and help me get this coffin out of the dirt!" the older man suddenly shouted.

I heard the frantic sounds of shovels scraping against the wood as they desperately dug me out.

The heavy lid finally creaked open, and the blinding, beautiful sunlight flooded into my dark prison.

The old gravedigger stared down at me in absolute horror, his face completely pale as I took a massive, gasping breath of fresh air.

"Call the police," I whispered hoarsely, my throat burning from the poison Christopher had given me.

The gravedigger nodded frantically, reaching for his cell phone, but before he could dial a single number, a shadow fell over the open grave.
