Chapter 5 - The Ransom Trap

I stared at the chilling text message, my hands trembling violently as I showed the screen to my brother.

David's jaw clenched tightly, his eyes narrowing in fierce concentration as he processed the new, terrifying threat.

"Christopher is smarter than I thought, he must have intercepted the old man before he could leave the cemetery," David muttered darkly.

I felt an overwhelming surge of guilt for the innocent gravedigger who had bravely dug me out of the dirt.

"We have to save him, David, I will not let an innocent man die because of my husband's greed," I insisted firmly.

A second text message quickly appeared on the secure screen, detailing exactly what Christopher wanted.

"Bring the signed transfer documents for the La Jolla property to the abandoned warehouse on Pier 4 by midnight, or the old man dies," the message read.

David immediately began packing a heavy tactical duffel bag with weapons and specialized surveillance equipment.

"It is an obvious trap, Samantha, he plans to kill you the second you hand over those property papers," David warned me.

I knew he was right, but I also knew this was our absolute best chance to catch Christopher in the act and record his confession.

"I am going in alone, David, if he sees you, he will execute the hostage immediately," I declared with newfound courage.

David reluctantly agreed, slipping a tiny, high-tech recording wire under the collar of my dark jacket.

At exactly midnight, I walked alone into the dark, echoing space of the abandoned warehouse on Pier 4.

The air smelled strongly of salt and rust, and the only light came from a single, swinging bulb in the center of the massive room.

Christopher was standing directly under the light, holding a heavy silver pistol aimed at the terrified gravedigger tied to a wooden chair.

"I am honestly impressed you survived the poison, sweetheart, you always were incredibly stubborn," Christopher sneered cruelly.

He demanded I slide the signed property transfer documents across the concrete floor immediately.

I slowly pulled the folder from my jacket, ensuring the hidden wire was capturing every single word of his confession.

"Why did you do it, Christopher? I loved you, I gave you absolutely everything," I asked, trying to stall for time.

Christopher laughed a cold, heartless laugh that completely shattered the final illusion of my broken marriage.

"I never loved you, Samantha, I only loved the massive bank accounts your pathetic father left behind," he admitted loudly for the recording.

Before I could toss the folder across the floor, the massive metal warehouse doors violently slammed shut behind me.
