Chapter 7 - The True Betrayal

I stared at Agent Vance in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.

"What do you mean the money never hit the account?" I demanded, my heart racing wildly.

"Julian authorized the transfer this morning, and I just locked it down."

Agent Vance pulled a digital tablet from his tactical vest and showed me the live banking ledger.

The thirty million dollars had been completely intercepted and rerouted before it ever reached the Cayman Islands.

"Someone else used a secondary backdoor protocol to steal the funds right out from under Julian," Vance explained grimly.

I looked down at Julian, who was currently being dragged to his feet by two federal agents.

Julian was staring at the tablet screen with a look of pure, unadulterated horror.

"That is entirely impossible!" Julian screamed frantically, struggling against the heavy steel handcuffs.

"Chloe and I were the only ones who possessed the encrypted routing numbers!"

The devastating realization hit me with the force of a freight train.

"It wasn't Chloe," I whispered, the final puzzle pieces violently slamming into place.

"It was Rachel."

My best friend had introduced me to Julian four years ago at a charity gala.

Rachel was an elite corporate software engineer who had helped me design my company's security architecture.

She was the only person in the world who knew the foundational code well enough to build a secondary backdoor.

Julian was just a manipulative pawn in a much larger, incredibly sophisticated game.

Rachel had used him to get close to my fortune, and she used Chloe's audit to create the perfect distraction.

"Rachel is currently in the Cayman Islands," I told Agent Vance rapidly.

"She sent me a text message earlier claiming Julian was on her flight."

Agent Vance immediately raised his radio and barked urgent orders to his international liaison team.

"We need to contact Interpol and freeze every single financial institution in the Cayman Islands right now," Vance commanded.

"If she manages to convert those digital funds into untraceable cryptocurrency, the money is gone forever."

I turned my back on a weeping, pathetic Julian as the agents dragged him out of my ruined office.

"I need a secure terminal, and I need a direct connection to the offshore banking server," I told Vance.

We rushed out of the building and climbed into the back of a heavily armored FBI mobile command vehicle.

Vance handed me a specialized federal laptop equipped with military-grade decryption software.

I spent the next forty minutes furiously typing, desperately trying to trace Rachel's digital footprint across the globe.

I finally managed to breach the offshore bank's primary firewall, gaining access to their live security cameras.

The video feed flickered onto the screen, showing the luxurious marble lobby of the international bank.

Rachel was standing confidently at the VIP teller window, wearing a stunning red designer dress.

She was casually sipping a glass of champagne while the teller processed the final, irreversible withdrawal of my thirty million dollars.
