Chapter 11 - The Ghost in the Machine

I stared at the pristine white rose until my vision blurred.

The initial shock rapidly faded, replaced by an absolute, freezing clarity.

Julian had been incredibly arrogant, but he was never smart enough to orchestrate an international cyber heist on his own.

I picked up my phone and immediately dialed Agent Vance’s direct federal line.

The line rang twice before a cold, automated operator voice filled my ear.

The automated voice informed me that the number I had dialed was no longer in service.

My stomach plummeted as I realized Agent Vance’s secure government line had been permanently disconnected.

I ran inside, locked the heavy mahogany front door, and rushed to my home office.

I booted up my encrypted laptop and accessed the federal court database to check on Julian’s prison status.

The secure database loaded slowly, the spinning wheel mocking my racing heartbeat.

When the file finally opened, I actually stopped breathing.

Julian’s inmate profile was completely wiped clean, stamped with a massive red "DECEASED" watermark.

He had supposedly died in his supermax cell of a sudden heart attack less than two hours ago.

Someone with terrifying reach and unlimited resources was actively silencing the pawns on the chessboard.

I opened a secure messaging app and typed a frantic message to my corporate attorney, David.

David had been the rock I leaned on during the entire ordeal, the only person I still explicitly trusted.

I told him about the white rose, the terrifying note, and Julian’s sudden, convenient death.

David replied instantly, telling me to pack a bag and meet him at a private airstrip outside the city.

He claimed my life was in immediate danger and we needed to move the thirty million dollars to a secure trust.

I grabbed a duffel bag from my closet and began throwing clothes into it with trembling hands.

As I reached into my desk drawer to grab my passport, my fingers brushed against a forgotten item.

It was the specialized, thermal-reactive vanishing ink pen I had used to trick Rachel at the bank.

I froze, staring down at the sleek silver pen in my palm.

Julian had not bought that pen, and neither had Rachel.

David had given me that exact pen as a corporate anniversary gift three years ago.

He was the only person in the entire world who knew I possessed it.

The terrifying puzzle pieces violently snapped together in my mind.

David was not my savior.

He was Cassius.
