Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate

On a warm Friday evening, I sat on my front porch, sipping an expensive glass of red wine to celebrate my company's latest milestone.
The neighborhood was incredibly quiet, the setting sun painting the sky in brilliant shades of purple and gold.
I felt a profound sense of absolute victory, knowing I had completely mastered my own destiny.
A sleek, unmarked delivery van pulled slowly onto my street and stopped perfectly at the end of my driveway.
A courier wearing a dark uniform stepped out, carrying a small, beautifully wrapped package.
He walked up the steps, placed the box on the porch, tipped his hat respectfully, and drove away without saying a single word.
I frowned, completely confused, as I set my wine glass down on the small patio table.
I was absolutely not expecting any deliveries, and the box lacked any standard shipping labels.
I carefully untied the silk ribbon and lifted the lid of the small cardboard box.
Inside, resting on a bed of black velvet, was a single, pristine white rose.
Tucked beneath the fragile petals was a heavy, handwritten note on expensive, watermarked cardstock.
I picked up the note, my heart suddenly skipping a beat as a cold, terrifying dread crept into my chest.
I recognized the elegant, sweeping handwriting instantly.
It was the exact same handwriting I had seen on the forged property deed Julian used to sell my house.
I unfolded the heavy paper with trembling fingers and read the short, chilling message.
"Julian, Chloe, and Rachel were only the desperate middlemen playing a much larger game," the terrifying note read.
"You successfully protected your thirty million dollars, Maya, but you completely missed the bigger picture."

I stared at the paper, my breath catching in my throat as the true, horrifying reality finally set in.
"You have my money, and I am coming to collect it. - C."
