Chapter 6 - The Chemical Distraction

I raised my hands slowly, projecting total compliance to keep Evan from pulling the trigger.
I told him I needed to retrieve my secure banking laptop from the kitchen counter to complete the massive transfer.
Evan nodded aggressively, dragging the terrified waiter along by his collar as he followed me.
Claire and Arthur remained frozen in the living room, completely paralyzed by their own cowardice.
I walked steadily into the kitchen, my mind racing through my extensive knowledge of chemical reactions.
My eyes landed on the heavy bottle of industrial ammonia cleaner sitting innocently next to the sink.
Right beside it was a bottle of concentrated liquid bleach I used for my white linens.
I knew that mixing the two common household liquids would instantly create a highly toxic, blinding chloramine gas.
I pretended to stumble, violently swiping both bottles off the counter so they crashed onto the tile floor.
The plastic bottles shattered upon impact, instantly mixing the dangerous chemicals directly at Evan's expensive leather shoes.
A thick, highly noxious white vapor erupted from the floor with an aggressive hiss.
Evan violently coughed and dropped his weapon, desperately clutching at his fiercely burning eyes.
I grabbed Daniel's hand and yanked him away from the blinding, toxic cloud of gas.
I yelled for us to run toward the reinforced panic room located deep inside my basement.
We sprinted through the hallway, gasping for fresh air as the toxic smoke rapidly expanded.
I reached the heavy steel door of the basement and shoved Daniel safely down the wooden stairs.
I turned around to grab Claire, foolishly hoping my daughter would finally choose the right side.

Instead, Claire slammed the basement door directly in my face and quickly engaged the exterior heavy deadbolt.
She yelled through the thick wood that she was incredibly sorry, but she was too afraid of what Evan would do to her.
