Chapter 2 - The Intruders

Evan stood in the doorway, perfectly silhouetted by the warm light of my foyer.

He wore a look of fabricated concern that sent a violent shiver down my spine.

Claire appeared right behind him, holding a steaming mug of herbal tea.

They rushed out into the rain, guiding me inside with entirely fake affection.

I forced my muscles to relax, pretending to be deeply lethargic and confused.

I stumbled slightly, leaning heavily against Evan's shoulder as we entered the living room.

He smiled softly, but his grip on my arm was uncomfortably tight and bruising.

He guided me to the large leather armchair and told me to just rest my eyes.

I slumped into the soft cushions and let my eyelids droop, breathing in a slow, deep rhythm.

Claire set the mug of tea on the coffee table and knelt beside me.

She gently stroked my hair, whispering that everything was going to be perfectly fine.

A tear slipped down my cheek, not from the drug they thought I took, but from absolute heartbreak.

Once they believed I was completely unconscious, their sweet demeanor vanished instantly.

Evan abruptly stood up and began pacing the wooden floor of the living room.

He aggressively asked Claire if she knew the combination to the wall safe in my study.

Claire hesitated, her voice trembling slightly as she admitted she only knew the old passcode.

Evan cursed under his breath and pulled a heavy crowbar from his expensive leather briefcase.

He told her that they did not have time to play guessing games with the security keypad.

I kept my eyes shut, secretly pressing my thumb against the panic button in my pocket.

I felt the device vibrate once, confirming the silent signal had been successfully sent to Lena.

Evan confidently walked toward my study, completely unaware that his every word was being recorded by my phone.

Claire suddenly asked him if the dosage in the restaurant drink was truly painless.

Evan stopped walking and let out a cold, chilling laugh.

He casually revealed that the poison was never intended to simply make me sleep.

It was an undetectable synthetic compound designed to induce a massive, fatal heart attack within two hours.

He looked at his luxury watch and announced that the medical examiner would soon be picking up my corpse.
