Chapter 4 - The Dead Man's Hand

My eyes snapped open, completely startling everyone in the quiet living room.
I sat up straight in the leather armchair and stared directly into my daughter's terrified eyes.
Claire let out a high-pitched scream and backed away until she hit the wall.
I calmly informed them that the poisoned drink was currently sitting safely in a police evidence locker.
Evan's smug, arrogant expression completely vanished, replaced by a mask of pure, unadulterated panic.
I told Arthur that his entire legal career was permanently over and he would die in a federal prison.
I bluffed confidently, stating that the house was already completely surrounded by heavily armed SWAT officers.
Arthur frantically scrambled toward the front door, desperately trying to escape the massive trap.
Evan violently grabbed the lawyer by his expensive collar and shoved him hard against the wooden door.
My son-in-law reached into his tailored jacket and pulled out a heavy, suppressed pistol.
He aimed the deadly weapon directly at Arthur's face, warning him not to take another step.
Claire dropped to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably and begging Evan to put the gun down.
I stood up slowly, using my authoritative forensic voice to demand that Evan surrender immediately.
I explained that shooting us would completely ruin his carefully crafted narrative of a natural death.
Evan laughed bitterly, a sound completely devoid of any remaining sanity.
He confessed that he did not actually care about my stupid estate or the luxury lifestyle.
He angrily revealed that he owed three million dollars to a ruthless cartel operating out of the city.
The cartel had given him exactly twenty-four hours to produce the cash, or they would skin him alive.

He turned the suppressed pistol away from Arthur and aimed it squarely at my chest.
He cocked the hammer and whispered that he was just going to shoot me and stage a violent robbery instead.
