Chapter 9 - The Rooftop Chase
I left my mother struggling on the floor and sprinted out the emergency exit after my sister.
I chased Chloe up the final two flights of concrete stairs leading to the hospital roof.
The freezing night air hit my face as I burst through the heavy metal access door.
Chloe was standing dangerously close to the edge of the roof, her hair whipping wildly in the winter wind.
She held Liam awkwardly against her chest, stepping backward as I slowly approached her.
She screamed that she deserved the trust fund money because she was always the favorite child.
She threatened to drop my son over the edge if I did not transfer the bank funds immediately.
I stopped moving, raising both of my hands to show her I was unarmed.
I knew that trying to reason with her greed was completely pointless.
I had to offer her something physically valuable to distract her from the baby.
I slowly unbuckled my solid platinum watch, which was worth over forty thousand dollars.
I also pulled a highly realistic, fake corporate bearer bond from my wallet.
I told Chloe that the bond was worth half a million dollars in untraceable cash.
I tossed the heavy watch and the fake paper onto the gravel roof deck, ten feet away from her.
Chloe's greedy eyes instantly locked onto the sparkling metal and the promise of wealth.
She placed Liam roughly onto the cold gravel and lunged forward to grab the items.
I sprinted the short distance and snatched my crying son safely into my arms.
Suddenly, the roof access door burst open, and a dozen armed police officers swarmed the deck.
They immediately tackled Chloe to the ground, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
Downstairs, other officers had successfully arrested my mother in Maya's hospital room.

As the police dragged my mother onto the roof to load them into the secure transport elevator, she looked at me and smiled.
She whispered that Mark had already transmitted the stolen corporate files to a foreign buyer using a cellular hotspot in the garage.
