Chapter 3 - The Hidden Motive

I stared at the declined transaction notification on my phone screen in absolute disbelief.

They were trying to flee the country before I returned from Germany.

I immediately dialed the Miami police department and demanded to speak to a detective.

I explained that my family had poisoned my infant son, stolen corporate secrets, and were currently attempting to flee.

The dispatcher told me that without an active New York warrant, they could not raid the luxury hotel room.

I cursed in frustration and hung up the phone.

I needed concrete proof of their ultimate motive to force the federal authorities to act.

A nurse tapped my shoulder and told me that Maya had finally woken up.

I rushed into the intensive care unit and held my wife's fragile, trembling hand.

Maya looked up at me with tears in her eyes and asked if Liam was safe.

I promised her that our son was resting comfortably in the pediatric ward under heavy guard.

Maya took a shallow breath and whispered that Eleanor had forced her to sign a stack of legal papers while she was heavily medicated.

She told me that Eleanor had demanded the blue folder containing the deeds to her late father's estate.

I immediately logged into the hidden security camera I had installed inside my home safe.

The video feed showed the interior of the steel box completely emptied of Maya's inheritance documents.

In their place, Eleanor had left a brand new, highly suspicious legal document.

It was a massive life insurance policy taken out on Maya's life just two weeks ago.

The sole beneficiary listed on the multi-million dollar policy was my mother.
