Chapter 8 - The Maternity Ward

My blood ran entirely cold as Mark's sinister laughter echoed through the parking garage.
I delivered a swift, heavy punch to his jaw, knocking him completely unconscious on the concrete.
I grabbed the black duffel bag containing the prototype and sprinted toward the emergency stairwell.
I ignored the burning pain in my lungs as I climbed six flights of stairs at a dead sprint.
I burst through the heavy fire doors onto the maternity floor, praying I was not too late.
The hallway was eerily silent, and the overhead fluorescent lights flickered ominously.
I saw two hospital security guards lying completely motionless on the floor outside Maya's room.
Someone had injected them with a powerful sedative to bypass the security lockdown.
I dropped the duffel bag and kicked the heavy wooden door to Maya's room wide open.
My mother was standing over Maya's bed, wearing a stolen blue nurse's uniform and a surgical mask.
She was holding a massive medical syringe directly over Maya's intravenous drip line.
On the other side of the room, Chloe was forcefully yanking Liam out of his protective hospital bassinet.
Maya was screaming weakly, completely unable to fight back against the two women.
I let out a roar of absolute fury and launched myself across the room.
I tackled my mother around the waist, slamming her violently against the medical machinery.
The lethal syringe flew out of her hand and shattered harmlessly against the linoleum floor.
My mother screamed in rage, clawing viciously at my face with her sharp fingernails.

I managed to pin her arms down, completely neutralizing her threat to my wife.
I turned my head just in time to see Chloe sprint out the emergency exit, holding my crying son tightly in her arms.
