Chapter 6 - The Missing Key

A wave of pure panic washed over me as the GPS signal entered the city limits.
My family had not fled to Miami for a vacation at all.
They had driven down the coast to establish a fake alibi before immediately turning around.
They were coming back to New York to finish the dark job they had started.
I gently shook Maya awake, needing to know if there was anything else they wanted from us.
Maya blinked sleepily and asked why I looked so terrified.
I asked her what else my mother had demanded before leaving her to starve in the apartment.
Maya's eyes widened in sudden, horrifying realization.
She whispered that my mother had spent hours searching the apartment for the safety deposit box key.
That box contained the physical gold bars Maya's grandfather had left her for emergencies.
Maya confessed that when she realized they were going to leave her to die, she took desperate action.
She swallowed the small brass key with a glass of water to keep it out of their greedy hands.
My mother had been completely furious when she realized what Maya had done.
Maya began to cry, trembling as she recalled my mother's final words before walking out the door.
My mother had sworn she would return in a few days to cut the key out of Maya's stomach herself if necessary.
I felt a sickening surge of nausea as I realized why they were rushing back to the city.
They needed that key to access the gold before they could permanently disappear.
I looked at the tracking map again, and my heart completely stopped in my chest.

The GPS signal was no longer moving through the busy streets of Manhattan.
The stolen prototype was currently parked exactly three blocks away from this very hospital.
