Chapter 7 - The Decoy

I immediately pressed the emergency call button on the hospital wall.
I demanded that the security desk lock down the entire maternity ward and the intensive care unit.
I explained that three highly dangerous individuals were attempting to breach the building.
The nurses rushed into the room, locking the heavy doors and drawing the privacy blinds.
I kissed Maya's forehead and promised her that I would not let them anywhere near her or Liam.
I pulled a heavy metal fire extinguisher from the hallway cabinet and sprinted toward the service elevators.
I watched the GPS tracker on my phone as the red dot moved into the hospital's underground parking garage.
I rode the elevator down to the basement, determined to intercept them before they could reach the stairs.
The doors chimed open, revealing a dark, damp concrete garage filled with parked cars.
I crept between the vehicles, gripping the heavy metal cylinder tightly in my sweating hands.
I spotted Mark standing near a gray rental van, holding the black duffel bag containing my prototype.
I did not hesitate for a single second.
I charged forward and swung the fire extinguisher directly into his chest.
Mark gasped for air and collapsed against the side of the van, dropping the heavy bag to the concrete.
I pinned him to the ground, pressing my knee forcefully into his throat.
I demanded to know where my mother and sister were hiding.
Mark spit blood onto the floor and began to laugh with a sickening, unhinged joy.
He told me that he was perfectly fine taking a beating if it meant he got paid.
May you like
He grinned wildly and whispered that he was only a paid distraction to draw me into the basement.
He said my mother and sister were already upstairs, dressed perfectly in stolen hospital scrubs.
