Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Mark aimed his smoking gun directly at the center of my chest.

He looked down at David's lifeless body and laughed a cruel, hollow laugh.

He told me that I should have just taken the injection in the car and died peacefully.

I raised the heavy pistol David had given me, my hands shaking violently with untamed rage.

I demanded to know how he could possibly sell his own flesh and blood to monsters.

Mark scoffed, stepping slowly down the stairs toward me.

He claimed that the children meant nothing to him compared to his own survival and luxury.

He said the syndicate would have tortured him for months if he failed to pay his massive debts.

I told him I would gladly die before I let him hand my babies over to those wealthy strangers.

Mark smirked, completely unbothered by the gun trembling in my hands.

He confidently raised his weapon, aimed right between my eyes, and pulled the trigger.

A loud, hollow click echoed through the stairwell.

Mark looked down at his gun in absolute, unfiltered shock.

He frantically racked the slide, but the weapon simply clicked again.

I realized that David had expertly removed the firing pin from Mark's gun before Mark stole it from the armory.

Mark looked back up at me, the arrogant smirk completely vanishing from his pale face.

He raised his hands in surrender, suddenly pleading for his life like a pathetic coward.

I did not hesitate to pull the trigger on my own weapon.

The gun roared to life, sending a bullet tearing straight through Mark's right kneecap.

He screamed in sheer agony and collapsed in a heap of blood on the concrete stairs.

I stepped right over his writhing body and kicked the heavy wooden doors wide open.

I burst into the lavish auction room, aiming my weapon at the wealthy crowd.

The room fell completely silent, but my heart stopped beating when I looked at the stage.

Eleanor was standing on the edge of a high indoor balcony, dangling both of my crying babies over the lethal drop.
