Chapter 2 - The Disappearing Nurse

I pulled my head back into the room and closed the door without making a sound.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird trying to escape its cage.
I waited exactly three minutes before stepping out into the sterile white hallway.
I completely ignored the searing pain in my abdomen and walked quickly toward the nurses' station.
A young woman in blue scrubs looked up from her computer monitor with a polite smile.
I asked her where I could find a nurse named Judy who was working in the neonatal unit this morning.
The young woman frowned and typed rapidly on her keyboard.
She looked back up at me with a deeply confused expression on her face.
She stated that there was no one named Judy employed at this entire hospital.
I insisted that Judy had just been in my room less than an hour ago to drop off my surviving son.
The nurse shook her head firmly, explaining that she was the only person authorized to transfer infants today.
A cold wave of absolute dread washed over my entire body.
I turned away from the desk and rushed toward the main lobby elevators.
I needed to find hospital security and show them the terrifying video on my phone.
When I reached the ground floor, my eyes were drawn to the large television screen mounted above the waiting area.
A breaking news report was flashing across the screen with bright red letters.
The news anchor solemnly reported that a local woman was just killed in a horrific hit-and-run car accident.
A photograph of the victim flashed on the screen for the entire lobby to see.
It was Judy.
The kind nurse who had tried to warn me was now dead.
I backed away from the television, feeling the walls of the lobby spinning wildly around me.
Suddenly, a strong, heavy hand clamped down viciously on my left shoulder.
I froze in pure terror as hot breath brushed against my ear.

Mark spoke in a low, dangerous whisper that sent shivers down my spine.
"You really shouldn't be wandering out of bed, my love."
