Chapter 2 - The Silver Smoke

Kane instantly roared and covered Harper's face with his broad chest.
He recognized the bitter scent of refined wolfsbane and silver ash immediately.
The toxic gas was designed to forcibly trigger his feral state.
His golden eyes shifted into a terrifying, unnatural shade of crimson red.
His claws extended as he violently tore the heavy sofa to pieces.
Harper coughed and struggled to breathe the contaminated air.
She placed her bare hands directly on either side of his massive jaw.
She forced the Alpha King to look directly into her calm eyes.
She whispered that he was stronger than the poison in his lungs.
A miraculous shift occurred in the room.
Her touch acted as a complete anchor for his fractured mind.
Kane scooped her into his arms and kicked the solid oak door entirely off its iron hinges.
They spilled out into the main hallway just as the medical team rushed forward.
Gideon Locke stared at the shattered door in absolute disbelief.
Kane demanded to know who had authorized the ventilation purge.
Vivian Mercer stepped out of the shadows with a perfectly calculated gasp.
She claimed the automated security system had experienced a fatal glitch.
Harper leaned heavily against Kane's chest to catch her breath.

She noticed a heavy silver ring dangling from Vivian's gold necklace.
It was the exact signet ring her father had supposedly lost five years ago.
